Four of our members of staff have ‘Trauma Informed Practictioner status’ They run sessions that seek to acknowledge our student’s painful experiences, help them process what they have been through and bring down their feelings of stress and anxiety. Listening and talking things through are powerful tools for bringing about social connection and change.
What does this look like?
- Understanding of neuroscience and how the brain and body work in response to challenging situations.
- Understanding that all our students, parents and carers have been on difficult and sometimes traumatic journeys to get to Future Education.
- Real care and engagement with young people who are struggling to manage the world.
- Skilled emotionally available adults who are there to support our young people through every part of their school day.
Our staff understand that the most important thing is to build a relationship by:
- Listening to bring stress levels down.
- Helping the student to find words for their feelings
- Helping the student to reflect on a situation
- Letting the student feel understood.
- Showing empathy helps students learn, enjoy relationships and be kind to others.
1:1 Music sessions,
Singing, rapping, recording or playing the drums are all ways in which our students can express themselves. Our professional music studio allows our young people to forget their worries and immerse themselves in music.
1:1 Keep Fit Sessions
Being active and keeping fit is an incredible way to build self esteem and confidence. Along side PE sessions, we offer students the opportunity to go to the gym where they can work on their own programmes of self-care.
1:1 Arts and crafts sessions
We know that the brain needs creative stimulation for all sorts of reasons. It can be a way of expressing something very painful or it can be to way unleash wonderful thoughts, explore play and humor while exercising imagination. This is fundamental to meeting the emotional needs of all our students.
1:1 Sensory Sessions
We know that our students need to break up cognitive tasks (Lessons) with sensory breaks – timed sessions where students engage in a circuit of different activities to regulate the brain are used throughout the day. Students with neurodiverse needs particularly benefit from having these sessions, learning the skills to regulate their bodies and minds.
Trauma informed sessions
LEGO Therapy
Is designed to support students with social and communication difficulties including those with autism or other neurodiverse challenges. Lego therapy uses bricks to encourage collaborative play and social interaction among participants. This therapy aims to develop communication, imagination and social skills.
Speech & Language Therapy
At Future Education we understand the importance of helping our students to communicate. Many of our young people have diagnoses of a range of disabilities which impact on the way they can understand the world and communicate their own feelings. It is vital that we equip these students with strategies to help them both at school but also for their futures. Our full-time speech and Language Therapist runs individual and group sessions with students and also offers staff training so that a consistent approach is used across the school.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is a psychotherapy that uses music as a form of expression to bring about change and development in an individual’s social and emotional well-being. Creating and sharing music with another person who is able to listen, support and bring understanding can help process and work though experiences of abuse, trauma, neglect or challenging relationships.
Music Therapy can also be used to support development within communication, movement and cognitive skills. In a Music Therapy session, the emphasis is on encouraging creative expression rather than teaching musical skills. A range of instruments are provided, and individuals are invited to explore these instruments and their own voice to create their own sounds and music. Music is used to build a trusting and therapeutic relationship, to enable the young person to access meaningful therapy.
Wellbeing Walks
Groups of students are taken out on weekly walks around Norfolk. We often take the dog and a football and there is always a hot chocolate at the end of it.
We also run these sessions on an individual basis for some students. We can see the benefit this brings to us all as we are able to run around in the fresh air and play.
Dogs to make us happy!
Our three beautiful dogs are a wonderful way for the students to feel calm and safe. Reggie, Molly and Raven live in the English room. They love to hear students read or just sit and have a cuddle when they need it.
Dog walking is essential and many of our students will take them out at breaks and lunch times, playing ball on the field or throwing a stick … we all love it!
