Who we are

Future Education is an independent specialist school offering places for students who have social emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs aged 13 to 16 years. All our students are required to have an education, health and care plan (EHCP). Many of our students have additional needs for example ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia and have often had difficult prior life-experiences and have found that they have not been able to thrive in mainstream settings.

We offer a curriculum which allows our students to gain qualifications in a wide range of subjects both academic and vocational, across the full spectrum of abilities. This is supported by a suite of interventions providing therapy, academic catch-up and wellbeing activities and sessions.

Provisions

There are two provisions over one site; tailored delivery and core.

The core provision has about 35 students working in five groups which are mixed in age and gender taking a stage rather than age approach. Each group is supported by a key Learning Support Assistant who stays with the group for the morning whilst they are engaging with academic learning.

The tailored delivery provision has about 9 students and comprises of a group of teaching staff working with students in very small groups of 2 or 3 each student has their own space to retreat to if overwhelmed or in need of social support. This provision is available for students who struggle to form relationships with other students, whose needs are complex frequently anxious in social settings.

Our approach

At the heart of everything we do is ‘The Safe Approach.’ We want our students to experience love, care, excitement about the world and its opportunities.

The safe approach recognises that it is through making strong relationships and being emotionally available for our students we can challenge poor self-esteem and show young people how important they are. This is not something that happens quickly but through staff care, containment and emotional attunement students can move on from previous difficult experiences to feeling loved and achieving.

We understand that for a teenager school is not always an easy place and that there will be bumps in the road. We acknowledge this and understand that it only through feeling safe can we overcome the difficulties together.

Our approach

What we value

Success is so much more than academic outcome and here at Future Education we value and celebrate progress in many areas including social and emotional regulation, kindness, attitude towards learning, attendance, building positive relationships, showing unconditional positive regard.

Some of the ways we celebrate our students include

  • Trips
  • Weekly assemblies
  • Postcards home
  • Phones calls home

We work very hard to develop an excellent relationship with the parents and carers of our students. We have a thriving parent/carer forum meeting each half term during the day with coffee, tea and delicious home-made cakes our parents and carers are able to share stories and issues, hear about what their children are studying, find out information around particular needs such as ADHD from outside speakers.

Staff at Future Education are confident and skilled in building positive relationships that help to break down barriers, build self-esteem and joyously celebrate even the smallest steps.
